The MVNN is a neutral holder, the tip is centered on the tool holder. So it cannot be touched to the face, or back face of anything. I have eyeballed it, but I guess a microscope type setter is about the only way?

I suppose for left hand tools a guy could keep a piece of steel with a 1" collar turned on the end, and chuck it up when the need arises.

I use a VNMG in a Kennametal neutral holder, there is a reference dimension from the side of the toolholder to the center of the tool nose. I just touch off the side of the toolholder and add that dimension. I also use a back cutting boring bar and I use the same method. It gets you close enough so that only a small offset adjustment is needed.
