I am very new at using CNC machines. I will be cutting wood. My boss would like to know how long a cut will take, but that depends on the feedrate. When I ask people about the feedrate, they cannot give me an actual value because it depends on too many factors like the wood dimension and type, etc.
What they do tell me, is I should monitor the power draw of the motor using an ammeter. I am using a sinumerik 840D. There are so many warning and safety measures on that thing, I believe it already monitors the amperage itself. I have looked in the parameter manual, but there are so many, and a simple search does not find it. I also need to keep monitoring the amperage to roughly keep track of tool sharpness.

Does anyone know if the Sinumerik 840D monitors the amperage? Do you know what the parameter is called? Is there a common way to monitor it?

There is a load monitor right up front on the "machine" page. That should be all you need.

Is there a reason you need the actual number of amps?
