Has anyone heard of a problem when machining steel, then aluminum and having the coolant go bad? I have never had this problem but someone asked me this today. I told them "have you looked in the coolant tank now" it's dirty as it is, so how could anything else hurt it.

i used to work with a guy that chewed tobacco and he would spit in the cabinet. then the spit would get washed into the coolant tank and his machine would turn rancid before anyone elses machine...jim

actually PrIck here is another example of you not knowing what your talking about.
if you read my post no where did i say that i ran the machine he spat in.
all i said was that he contributed to the bacteria count by spitting in the coolant.
again you have proven that your an idiot that cant read or doesnt pay attention...TOOLMAKERJIM

Yuck! That's grounds for immediate termination, as far as I'm concerned!

Did he also think that a VMC made a nice substitute for a latrine? Sheesh!

no you wouldnt, you would never make it thru the interview process.

actually everyone i work with likes me.
with the exception of one guy who is like you to him everyone is a dumbass. he is one miserable person, as i surmise you are.

you see i offer advice when asked and can actually carry on an intelligent conversation on a variety of subjects.

i will teach 2 apprenticeship classes one in math the other in blueprint reading at the local Community College.
i also may teach entry level CNC classes, i havent made up my mind on that one yet.

i give credit where it belongs when someone comes up with a idea.
i can actually mentor people and do so frequently.

i dont steal proprietery infomation and sell it claiming it as my own.

im so competent at what i do the leadman has approached me to train the modelmakers on CNC's which i will do willingly.
im not the least bit worried that some young idiot will replace me, like i sense you are.

you seem the most insecure individual i have ever read anything from. i bet your really a janitor trying to pass as a programmer.

i am secure in my life and vocation. i have nothing to proove to anyone.

i certainly dont try to make myself fell superiour to anyone by name calling and belittleing others.

when asked a question, by someone intelligent, i can actually give an answer if i know it. if i dont then i say "I dont know."

as ive stated here several times you dont contribute. you just aggravate.

but as my children and now my grandchildren say.
"Stick and stones may break my bones but words will never harm me"

even you should get that, well maybe not it may just be a little too advanced for you, PrIck...TOOLMAKERJIM

Now that we got that out of the way how about my original question? Is it possible to contaminate your coolant by leaving steel in the machine mixed with aluminum?

I don't think so either - I suspect that you just got a bloom of bacteria... I've seen machines that routinely mixed them, and have yet to have to hold my nose...

I do it all the time, copper, steel, aluminum, it's all in there and my coolant has been in there for over 8 months + makeups. My rotting problems have stopped after I started using a coalescer / skimmer and air bubbler.

I try and avoid getting body fluids in the tank, even wash my hands before working.

actually everyone i work with likes me.
look in the mirror stoolmaker smalley and give yourself positive affirmations:
"everyone i work with likes me"
"everyone i work with likes me"
"everyone i work with likes me"

    next one stoolmaker smalley:
"i can actually carry on an intelligent conversation"
"i can actually carry on an intelligent conversation"
"i can actually carry on an intelligent conversation"

    here's another excercise stoolmaker smalley:
"im competent at what i do"
"im competent at what i do"
"im competent at what i do"

i think you need more affirmation stoolmaker smalley:. try these:

"i am secure in my life and vocation"
"i am secure in my life and vocation"
"i am secure in my life and vocation"

prove this to yourself stoolmaker smalley:
"i have nothing to proove to anyone"
"i have nothing to proove to anyone"
"i have nothing to proove to anyone"

even though it is not true here is another:
"i dont try to make myself fell superiour to anyone by name calling and belittleing others"
"i dont try to make myself fell superiour to anyone by name calling and belittleing others"
"i dont try to make myself fell superiour to anyone by name calling and belittleing others"

when they get to you stoolmaker smalley just tell yourself:
"Stick and stones may break my bones but words will never harm me"
"Stick and stones may break my bones but words will never harm me"
"Stick and stones may break my bones but words will never harm me"

I browse this forum on a daily basis, and everytime I see a post from Pi I get sick to my stomach. He is insulting, disrespectful, and by his own admission a thief. Why he isnt banned is beyond me.
He brings nothing to the forum, or to the people that participate here with the exception of aggravation. It is your forum Mr. Thomas, do with it as you will, but there is a difference between banter and out right harrassment of contributing members. Jim has posted more than one useful piece of information, and I see no reason why he even comes back. No one wants to participate in Pi's juvenile antics and left as is, he will drive more and more people from your site and reduce the number of posts by novices for fear of being attacked.

It seems to me, I'm always hearing how tramp oil is the culprit for causing bacteria in the coolant. Which makes a skimmer the first thing I would think of buying. Come to think of it, I need one myself.

    Pi,
That isn't true. Jim's post are well written and easy to follow. Most of the things he has suggested I've done also in years past. I don't always agree on specifics as far as good way/best way but I haven't read anything he has suggested that wouldn't work.I guess all of us have our own favorite way of doing things. Just because I like chocolate ice cream doesn't make the guy that likes strawberry an idiot. It would be nice if you two could call a truce.

I have noticed the coolant going really stinky switching between alum and steel. Seems like 7075 is always when I notice it . I now use a skimmer and a fish tank bubbler and an antibacterial additive and no problems. The tramp oil starves the coolant for oxygen and kets the anerobic bacteria get out of control.
