I learned the trade of Tool-Diemaking as an apprentice in Germany, immigrated to Chicago many years ago and worked in many different Machine shops.
The term Journeyman comes from many years ago, you were expected to serve your apprenticeship and then journey from village to village and work in many places and learn something new from each shop you worked for, until you were ready to take the test that made you a Master of your trade.
Only a Master was qualified to start a shop as his own business.
That applies to all trades, from Butcher to Baker, etc.
I learned CNC in Chicago, good enough to teach for Fanuc in Elk Grove Village, a Chicago suburb and became totally self employed back in the days of the 0T and 0M control series and worked at it ever since.
My goal was always to make my training as detailed as possible, but also as simple as possible, from figuring partshapes to RPM and feedrates for finish cuts.
I would love to talk to someone that has a similar job or to anyone that needs free phone or email help. Look for examples and samples on doccnc.com.
Good luck: Heinz.
