Thread: Are there endmills that will cut a key in hardened shaft?

    I would just be careful about diffrent batches of shafts varying in hardness with that lose a spec on the drawing. Might cut fine on the first few then get harder at the expense of the end mill!

    Garr endmills are wonderful for cutting hardened steel.

    Thanks, will keep that in mind. Might have been a false alarm. I quoted that thing at least 2 weeks ago, and still didn't get a p.o.

    At .070 DOC (or less) you're not gonna engage enough of the flute length to take advantage of any style variable helix feature.

    Don't let the price scare you, most dealers will give you 50% off.

    Up to 48 Rc is not that big a deal.. 52 and above starts to get rough. But there are specific tools for the 52-62Rc range. I don't sell OSG exocarbs but would recommend them. Imco also has tools for up to 62Rc.

    Another vote for woodruff followed by endmill for cleaning end.
