Need to rigid tap 5/8-7 acme in 3/4 in thick steel, cant find a tool with small enough shank to thread mill so using a tandem tap. Tested in aluminum first and it didn't sound very good. Anyone know of an indexable tool with a major diameter of no more than .500? Anyone have any experience with rigid tapping acme threads?
Thanks in advance,
Cory

A guy in the Haas forum down below just slammed an Acme tap through 17-4, a tandem. I've done it in Bronze, an inch through. Its not going to be a happy situation no matter what, lots of pucker factor.

What kind of "steel" are we looking at??

Use a heavy duty thread cutting oil on the tap, don't rely on coolant. That is about all I can recommend short of taking the job and doing it on the lathe.

Making a threaded insert (like a repair insert) containing the Acme thread inside and a conventional V thread on the OD might be a way to split the job between mill and lathe.
