We have had them outhere in Cali in my shop. Usually the lowered dually and the two pushy guys looking to "help me out" by taking the scrap and paying me more than usual...usually just tell them I have a company and to leave...doesn't go over to well.

Is this a group based on the "travelers" ?? They are a clan of people that set out from their home base in South Carolina and often pray on the home owner doing roofing, and driveway sealing and other scam deals...

Kinda like the gypsies of Spiro, Oklahoma. Thoroughly disreputable people.

Currently have a pair of "Catalonian" brothers trying to steal everything on the place. Happened to record one of them talking on his cell phone and quizzed him about the language. "Spanish from Catalonia." Took the recording to a language specialist I know and he said pure Romney. Friggin' gypsies.

Gypsies. That's the long and short of it. They offer so much because you won't get paid for all of it. They travel around and pay a "tribute" fee to the local gypsy king for the privelege of operating there. A common giveaway is 2 first names. like "Tom George". Best to do no biz with this bunch and get them off your property ASAP.

    Alphonso,

That is where we came up with the "gypsy" id on them. That shop was about 25 miles from Spiro. One of the guys said they reminded him of the "Spiro Gypsies". < (Sounds like a high school sports team????)

The best one I ever got was a realllllly LARGE Native american guy. He was looking for donations of aluminum and stainless for "training purposes" for the poor kids on the reservation. I flat told him to get over himself, and he must really take people for fools! He was very offended, and still kept to his story trying to make me feel bad. I carried on with my work after having asked him to leave. He tried following me into the shop, and I pulled my cell phone out of my pocket and told him to LEAVE... before I called the police, and recited his liscense plate number to him. He quickly shut up and left. The best part is that theres not an indian reservation within 200 miles, and probably 50 machine and welding shops within the same radius. His trailer was shamefully empty.

We have a trailer repair dept here at work, sounds like the same crew was here too. He wanted a "small" donation so kids at a native american camp could make belt buckles. They would come and pick through our scrap aluminum bin and take a few things while the driver would distract the shop mgr. Last time they were here right at the peak of the aluminum prices they snuck in the back lot at closing time and took all of our scrap aluminum and about 3grand worth of virgin parts (top rails, frame rails, fuel tanks). We called the police but they made it out of town before cops could catch them. We have standing orders if they ever show up again to box them in any way possible and call the cops or shoot if necessary.

The other problem is that 9 times out of 10, no matter HOW justified you were in shooting someone OR pointing a gun at someone, the cops and courts wouldn't see/handle it correctly.

We have a man and sometimes a woman last name Mark. They hand you a business card with an address on it. I checked out the address in S Bend and it was an alley. Ripped me off the first time so I wound up selling them some mag starters with a the copper, silver, and coils removed when they came back. They haven't been back since. I was also told that they ripped off a Chicago forklift dealer by saying they would buy a lot of forklifts from him. The dealer sold them a bunch of forklift batteries for almost nothing thinking they would be back after the forklifts. That was the last time he saw them. I think he lost $18,000. I also go to the same scrap yard they do and they have guys standing around watching them unload. A woman comes around with the same last name and doesn't get out of the truck and she wants junk for art work. Then she starts asking about carbide, stainless, brass, tool steel, and etc. Don't do business with them.

While they are trying to distract you with their BS, they are casing your shop for all the goodies they can see for midnight shopping. Always stopped them at the door and notified the other shops across from me. Not good.

Amen to that!! I'm the first of 3 Machine shops (on my edge of town)in our small community, and I usually see them pull up. As soon as I get rid of them, I call and warn the other guys.

dont any of you guys keep some guns just laying around near the shop entrance? I do, and keep a target up on a post out in the pasture field right by the shop. I dont worry about being cased by the idiots when they stop to look around. They see what I see and I always look over at whatever gun is by the door. If they look espescially eager I walk out on the dock and let fly a few rounds while they drive back out the lane. Would you come back? They haven't yet. Acting about half "off" doesn't hurt any either, you ain't trying to leave a good impression.
