I had to take a look inside the knee on my Schaublin 53, problem with the knee feed. It wouldn’t stay engaged in rapid traverse when raising the knee, the one time when you really want rapid traverse on a knee mill. Imagined all sorts of super expensive or unobtainable bits needed only to find most of the problem was a bent & very poorly fitted taper pin from a previous botched repair (photo 7). The internally toothed gear/coupling sleeve was over-travelling when engaging the down-feed (photo 5) & not fully engaging the up-feed (photo 6). Had to reposition the locating plunger & re-drill the indents in the gear which operates the selector (photo 8). Took some time to sort out but fortunately time is one luxury I have now. Seventeen hardened slotted head countersunk screws hold the aluminium cover plate on, it’s a bit of a fiddle to remove while the saddle is in place.
