Hi all,

I'm considering going to look at a 2003 Gildemeister CTX 420 lathe (12 tool vdi 40 turret, live tooling, y axis and programmable tailstock).

This would be our first "real" turning center, not really planning to use the Y axis right away but if the overall price is right it's nice to have.

My question is what is the general reputation of these machines? Anyone here running them? What do you like? What do you hate? Any major maintenance issues? I've seen the Heidenhain control on newer milling machines and it looked fairly slick, how are they on lathes? I would like to be able to program at least the non-y-axis work at the machine.

All comments welcome, we are a job shop that would be doing quite a variety of work with it but probably pc quantities under 300 per run. So I don't want the setup times to be insane. Also not looking to have something that is the fastest out there, the versatility is the key point as our work tends to demand capability more than outright speed.

Thanks so much.
