Help removing tool from spindle?

At work we have an 810 and two 840s with Siemens controls. We have no trouble removing the tools directly from the spindles on the 840s but the 810 is a different story. The only way to remove the tool is place it back into the magazine with a tool=0 or swap another tool from the magazine. The 810 is of course an older unit and has the same two buttons required to remove the tool from the spindle but they don't seem to work. The guys who went for the quick class on the machines forgot the procedure for the 810. Being able to remove the tool would speed up insert replace/inspection times and run times!
Can anyone help?

Is your procedure the exact way taking the tool out? Possibly the 840 and the 810 have different modes you have to be in while trying to get the tool out? I'm new to the 840 control but have found that repetitive procedure is its safety method in a way. Just throwing a thought out...
