I'm wondering what sort of forces are involved in feeding, and what sort of hp the spindle requires. I'm looking to weld various pre-prepped plates (back face is shallow-bevelled back to give same thickness at weld butt and flush front face), 5mm through 12mm alu alloy 5083

Thanks

try the welding institute [TWI], they have a lab at Port Talbot steelworks south Wales, i pass by most mornings, they do a lot of this kind of welding, they have a vidio on thier site of friction stir welding, they also do drive shafts and such like interestingly disimilar metals also

Troup,
For the 12 mm Plate i would use a machining center with at least 30HP,the machine that i use is rated at that. The forces that are involved are no more on the load meters than a 1" roughing endmill, although doing some experimental work i have triped the machines X axis overload.
I have also seen stir welding done on a bridgeport doing 6 mm plate, the bridgeport as it seemed did not enjoy going through this punishment.

If you have any more specific questions i may be able to help.

Matt
