Hello was wondering if anyone as just built up the worn area of a bucket shank insted of cuting them off and welding on the new one. Seams to me to be quicker to just build it up.

thanks for the info

I'm assuming that you mean the shank for a replaceable tooth.

I have done the weld build up and grind to shape routine more times than I care to think about. As well as cut off and replaced a few hundred!

Yes, it works just fine providing you start with a nice clean stub and use low hydrogen build up.

Make sure you grind the shank to as near a new shape as possible. Half the retention of the tooth is in the shape of the shank.

thanks for the reply was wondering what you ment by low hydrogen build up. would their be any advantage to using hard facing rod. I was planing on using the mig to build up.

thanks again

Jason

Low hydrogen would be 7018 or similar. MIG is a low hydrogen process. You wouldn't want to use hardfacing as it would be too brittle. Just use a good, tough, E70 and you'll be good.
