What is this band for on the inside of a pipe?

I was given this 12" dia pipe a while back from a pipe fitter and when it came it had this metal band on the inside of it which I have yet to take off, I was wondering what is this? Is it some sort of backer for welding? How would it be used and why is it there?

Thanks,

Adam

I've seen a similar feature on sanitary stainless and my best guess is to keep dings off the critical ID.

Its there to protect the end of the pipe and bevel, especially when pipes are lifted with a hook used in each end of the pipe which is a very common occurrence in the oilfield.

Cheers...
