I have a bunch of black pipe (the kind used for natural gas lines) laying around that I was thinking of using in a couple of projects. Any problem with welding this or special preparation required once the exterior black coating has been ground off? Thanks.

Nope. Just get that nasty coating off and weld away. You might want to clean a little more than just the area to be welded. Reason being is the heat from the weld zone will heat and melt the remaining coating producing a noxious odor.--Grant

Yes try to remove the black coating. I welded miles of it in the late 1970's when the companys left it in peoples yards and they wanted projects made from it...Bob
