I need to build 2 ramps for loading a car onto a trailer.
Specs
weight of car: 3500#
length of ramp: 57"
width of ramp: 16"
cross members; 2?
covering: 3/16 steel 3/4" eye expanded metal
Questions,
1)what shape steel should I use, square tube or channel iron?
2) what size? would 1 1/2" channel, or 1 1/2" x 1/8 square tube do? or larger?

the problem with using single side rails is they will bend sooner or later they will bend. unless you make them so heavy you can not move them easy.

i solved the problem by making mine out of
1 1/8x.125 wall tubing then making a brace out of the same tubing like a truss bridge. make the cross bars 10" apart and you dont need to cover them with any thing. i have been using them for 4 years now and have not had them bend yet. and you can carry them around with one hand.

i even loaded a j-d mc crawler on them and tractors that out weigh your car with no bending
