Big Blue saw website

Seems like this business model was invented by computer guys, who didnt realize that they are aiming at a type of customer that doesnt exist.
If I need a specific part, and I know what I am doing, I want to either deal with somebody local, or somebody who is the expert.

Sites like this are neither.

Like if I wanted waterjet or laser cutting, there are places near me, where I can talk it thru, and get a better job done.
If I want something like specific lengths of stainless steel all thread, something I had to buy several hundred of a few years ago, I can find a shop that does nothing but threading, and will UPS me a box of em cheaper than these guys.

For true custom machine work, there are very few customers who have the money to pay these guys rates, and dont already know shops to do the work. And I want to know a lot more about a shop- I want to know they have been in business for 50 years, have guys on the floor who have done it 100 times- like if I wanted a gear, I go to gear specialists. If I want stamping, I go to a stamper.

These guys are hoping for a customer with no experience, and lots of money. There arent many of those.

Exactly Ries,,,there are just some things that are better left off of the internet & sites like these are a perfect example of them.

Quote from Blog: "I had to change the pricing model to fit with what the manufacturing partners can handle"

So...we are buying a middleman.... Great...another level of communication where everything can get screwed up. (Hosed? :D )

Maybe they were copying Protomold... http://www.protomold.com/ they have done this business model successfully...but you do deal with them direct. The Big Blue Saw sounds like a kids show on PBS and their customer interface is simplistic to the point of looking unfinished. If the turn around is quick and quality is good folks will pay a lot to get something done. But if your only contact is a web page that doesn't instill confidence....well....
