R8 Boring Head Arbor: What Steel Alloy?

I picked up a small bridgeport boring head w/o an arbor at Cabin Fever last year. Thinking it would be the great basis of a ball turning attachment at some point in the future. But have run into a few instances where a small boring head, unlike my much larger Flynn, would have been handy.

Quality R8 boring head arbors aren't cheap and I know I could make one. What would be a good material to use? I made a slitting saw holder from a buggered R8 drill chuck arbor and it machined like 12L14. I have a good selection of 12L14. Would that work well as an arbor? If not can anyone recomend a good or better material choice if they feel 12L14 is unsuitable?

Thanks, mark

O-1 that is properly heat treated should work for this purpose, but I would just buy one. I have also found good R-8 holders at the used tool places for like $10.00 You can get Polish made ones new for a reasonable price.
