grizzly dro

From their catalog, I don't see anything special about the Grizzly DRO systems:

The price of their 2-axis system, with 12" X 30" travel, is $650.

But for even less money ($625), you could get a name brand (Mitutoyo) system with glass scales, and 0.0002" resolution, from Penn Tool Company:

On my Bridgeport, I have the older Mitutoyo system, which Penn still lists it in their catalog for $595:

I think it is a good product, and I am very satisfied with it.

The only possible advantage of the Grizzly DRO is that it is cheaper to add the third axis. But I don't think the third axis is all that useful. A separate quill scale might be useful, IMHO more so than a third DRO scale on the knee.

If you check the archives of this forum, there has been some talk about the "Shooting Star" system, and also another cheap DRO (was it "Sino" brand?) that was available on eBay for around $500 or less. Somebody here vouched for its quality.

If I wanted to get a DRO for a mill, I probably would buy the high resolution Mitutoyo from Penn Tool Co. for $625.

HERE is the guy that sells them, have a TopTen on the Mill and a Sino on the Lathe for almost 2 years now and never a problem.
HERE is the thread about DROs

When I bought my mill from Grizzly last year, I also ordered the Griz DRO.

I am happy with the Griz unit, using it for light hobby work. It has ABS incremental and sub datum options. Plus radius and shrinkage modes.

When I bought my mill I should have done more research, but this was before I found this board. I would defintely go with the Mitutoyo for the same price.

If you have any questions about the Griz just ask, and I will try to answer them for you.
