Could some one let me know what the correct rake on a lathe tool for cutting brass/bronze is? TIA.

Thomas.

Rake for cutting brass or bronze should be zero or slightly negative. Not only turning tools but drills and reamers also work best this way. When grinding drills for brass, proceed as when thinning point, but touch entire cutting edge, grinding to zero rake. This effectively stops drill from grabbing and digging in.

If anyone is interested, zero or slightly negative rake works well when machining brittle plastics (i.e. acrylic, lexan, etc.) Prevents chipping.
