Machinist's vise vs Mechanics' Vise ?

Mechanics' vises are built to be beat upon relentlessly by gorillas.

Machinists' vises are built to hold more precision while being used in a production environment.

My observations after 20 years working with gorillas... ;)

After reading more, i see the machinist vise have stronger steel hence the higher cost of the machinist vise, no anvil or jaws for pipe.

Years ago I saw an unusual vice at a tire shop by the junk yard.
It was designed much like a lathe compound, having adjustable gibs instead of the usual loose fitting ram. It had a smooth blue/grey finish, much like a nice Hardinge machine.
I went back some time later willing to trade a new import vice for it - but it was gone, replaced with another new import. The gorrillas had hammered the unusual vice into oblivion. I presume this was a fine machinist vice. I have not seen another like it.
