My Ingersoll-Rand 2.5hp. compressor has been working great for about 12 yrs. Now all of a sudden it won't build over 20lb. pressure.
Any ideas?
It is electric

Assuming you can't see any obvious leaks in the piping, my first guess would be a cracked valve in the compressor head.

Have you changed the air filter lately? With the filter off feel and see if it is sucking air in, not just moving it in and right back out.
Could be a stuck valve, stuck/malfunctioning unloader system or pressure cutout switch. Could also be check valve between cylinder head and air tank.
Most of these problems are simple to fix. You need to troubleshoot the symptoms a little farther than won't pump more than 20psi.

I don't understand why a check valve would cause this problem, unless it also is part of the unloader.

If you can't hear any obvious air leaks on shutdown, it's got to be a pump problem. Broken piston, bad valve. What's the chance that a belt or pulley is slipping?

If the thing is piped into a shop, isolate the piping.
