this is the page I think has what I need perhaps

SOme blind some thru but 304 and 316 stainless...... some thru a layer of mild steel and then a layer of 304

8-32

10-32

5/16-24

I have two different lathes and a semi-crappy drill press to make this happen..... nothing fancy.

Is there something fancy I should get as well?

and while I'm at it.....

there are certain joys in drilling thru say..... a 5/16 stainless bolt

I just haven't found them yet unless actually drilling thru ten in a row without the drill being rendered useless counts

do these people or somebody else have the magic stuff for this as well?

HackASaw,

Now you tell me you want drills! Pretty soon, I should be getting a consulting check!

Most of ours come from http://www.maford.com/

Great people, good service, not cheap, but worth every penny.

For carbide drills, you need a rigid set-up. Worn chuck jaws and a vise that isn't clamped down will just break carbide drills.

I have had very good success with Guhring drills, available through MSC. I have a package of 1/8" GT100 drill bits and I have drilled about 30 holes in 304ss with the first drill bit and I am still useing it. This is on manual equipment. I can tell you that they are expensive but I bought this package when MSC had a sale on them and I will be buying more when they come on sale again.

As far as taps go, I really like the OSG EXO taps that MSC puts in thier sales books from time to time. I use the 3flt spiral point drills and they breeze through ss. You have to be carefull on blind holes though.

To be honest though I rarely use MSC any more unless they have something on sale. We finally found a good vendor for our cutting tools here in the local area that helps keep us supplied. Whenever I have a problem I just call them up and they can useually recommend a good tool for that application and even help us with technical problems. I suggest that you research the firms in your area and try to find the right company for you. The company we use is Cutting Tools and Service in Buford Ga. but I believe they have other offices in several states. The main warehouse is in NC.

Best of luck

Charles

Hacksaw,
Just call OSG. http://www.osgtool.com
They will tell you more than you ever wanted to know about tapping anything. One thing they will tell you is the list number for the right tap for you application. Then you can go to the big book and order the right one. Sometimes it won't be steam oxide coated or vanadium steel you want. But for stainless it probably is. Also they will tell you what cutting speed to use, and may recomend a different tap drill size than is on your wall chart. If I had your setup I would go for the crappy drill press with a Tapmatic tapping head. Now your talking a very efficient tapping machine, and breakage will be a thing of the past and you will have speed! No more dorking around to tap the hole. These cutting tool manufactures have a lot of data on their products and are more than happy to tell you what it is you need. They are not about to BS you. They want you to buy their products and OSG makes some good ones.
Good luck
