Wiper-geometry carbide inserts

Sandvik came to our school and gave a seminar on inserts. One thing they demonstrated was an indexible shell running through aluminum on one of the milling stations. One cut was made with a wiper in it, the other was not. Side by side the surface finish was noticiably better for the cut made with the wiper.

Interesting theory, wonder if it weakens the edge at all.

I've got a 1/2" sq HSS toolbit with about a 1/4" radius ground on it, just for finishing cuts.

The carbide wiper geometry might be better suited to getting close to a shoulder whereas my large radius bit is not.

used them on straight cuts, at home, manual machine, they are better

they claim you get faster feed at equally good finish

for hand feeding you just get the better finish

good company but buy American would be easier to order for small orders, like Kenametal
