Making a Flat Spring

If I remember right,To anneal a spring, take a tin can that is empty. Turn it over so the open end is down. With your hammer, beat a depression in the top of the can. Place spring in depression and fill with motor oil and light it. When the oil burns away, you should have a spring. Place spring in vise and compress it. Either you will have a spring or it will break.

u r looking to draw to a purple color for tempering a light spring up to a blue for a heavy spring maype 550 to 580 depending on time & material .....for a heavy spring u may need to burn it off twice...if u miss it on the far side , u can always reharden it , miss it on the near side , & u will remake it !......near 60 yrs ago ,i was taught to check for color in a somewhat dark corner of the shop ( no direct light ) when initially heating to a cooked carrot color for hardening ..& as stated, when u compress a folded mainspring for a double , like der alte buschenmeister hat gesagt ,,,"u hef a schpring ,or u aint"
