Got an Ellis 1600 bandsaw in today. Crate was damaged and the whole deal just looked odd somehow and then I realized it was upside down !
So, various bent sheetmetal parts and lord knows what else I may find after I turn it right side up.
I detailed all the damages I could see on the BOL, plus a note I may find more later. But what's the next step...call the dealer, Ellis, or ??
Truck company was Overnite Transport, which is now supposedly "UPS Freight" !
(This may all sound odd coming from me, but amazingly, I don't recall ever getting a new machine with damage before, so new territory here.. )

Generally, notify the seller/shipper, who then beats on the shipping company while (hopefully) your replacement is in transit... Most shipping companies I've dealt with won't even give the receiver the time of day.

When we had machines shipped, the buyer of the machine was responsible to collect from the trucking Co and it's insur Co. What I am sure of is that the machine belongs to the buyer, not the shipper. I think the FOB point has something to do with it, not sure though.
Example, sad as it is...
New machine from Cincinnati and the truck it's on takes a slide down a mountain side off the PA Turnpike in late Dec. Driver was killed and the machine is a total wreck. The insurance co paid us the distributor on the invoice for that wrecked machine and the customer ordered another machine.

Its important to document any damage on the shipper before signing it and sending the driver on his way.

Pictures are worth a thousand words... Of course, I'm sure Don took pics from every angle...

Did you miss the part in my post where I mentioned doing just that ??
Mark, re pictures...funny thing about that...I ALWAYS have at least one of my digital cameras with me....EXCEPT YESTERDAY ! Somehow I had removed one from the car and left both of them at the house...so much self inflicted ass kicking ensues... I did however have a video camcorder at the shop, so I took "movies" of the situation ! But if needed gonna be a PITA to capture images off the "film" for emailing plus quality will suck.
So, I left it upside down for now and will take my camera today

Ok.. then you owned it while it was in transit. Your insurance or whatever insurance was on it durring transit possibly provided by the trucking co is the one responsible.
Good luck

I had a saw damaged in shipping from enco. They didnt even think about sending me replacement parts they just shipped out a new one and let me use the first saw while I was waiting. They handled everything very professional on top of a good product and great price.

Funny thing, I've seen FOB many times and never knew exactly what it meant, but looked it up earlier today for an unrelated reason. I guess I never ran into a problem where it mattered.
But working MANY years ago shipping from smallish commercial warehouse, *I* had to file claims with the shipper, and relatively recently I had a shipping problem where the shipper would not even talk to me, had to go through the seller.
Oh well, sorry for the noise...

Are you sure it wasn't "Overturn Transport" now called "UPsidedown Freight"? Martin

D. Thomas, A buddy of mine sell's Ellis products, and from talking with him I was told that Ellis is a 1st rate outfit and he was sure they would help you in any way possible to solve this problem!. He personally know's the owner and his family that run's Ellis Machine Tool, and tells me they go out of their way to assure customer satisfaction. So, let Ellis know exactly what is going on and ask them to help you out with the trucking outfit that crashed your bandsaw!. Good-Luck Sir!!...

otto, I did call Ellis this morning and naturally the first thing out of his mouth after telling the saga was that I should have refused it !
Sounds like Ellis will deal with the claim but the end result will be them sending me replacement parts that I have to install...no compensation for the time I waste with all this...gawd...

What does FOB mean it is on my sales orders but I don't have a clue.
-
yep...DONT let the driver leave and dont sign for it until you check it for damages...
-
Cat, seeing as how that's exactly what I did I fail to see the point of your statement..

F.O.B. stands for "Free On Board" whatever that is supposed to mean.

FOB
A billing option. The shipper pays to ship the package or shipment to the port of export. The receiver pays the balance of the shipping and all duties and VAT (value added tax)
This typically means shipping was "prepaid and added" to the invoice by the shipper.
