Pipe Unions: is there a preferred direction of flow?

When installing a union into a piping system, is there a preferred direction relative to flow, (which side gets the fixed half, and which side gets the coupling nut) or is it just a matter of whatever direction is most convenient at time of installation?

Obviously, it is going to work in either direction, but was just wondering if there was some kind of "standard practice" that I am not aware of.

I try to put the pices with the collar in the position that will keep the collar from falling too far away from the joint when its apart
or on the half that it can't fall off of when its open

Flow goes through the nut side first. It is just good practice to get in the habit. Most of the time it wouldn't matter, but in some applications in reverse, the service (steam, high velocity liquids, ect) will erode the union.
