Ther is a Sebastion 12X36 for sale about 60 miles from me.

Is this brand worth considering, or should I maintain the 60 mile buffer?

Are these things older than dirt, or manufactured in recent times?

Sebastian lathes were a reasonable quality lathe. They were comparable to the Atlas, southbend, and logan. If I remember, some of them came with a larger hole through the headstock and they also made a smaller lathe with 4 feet between centers. They were supposedly popular with gunsmiths.

There are several different model 12x36 Sebastians, the Gold Seal model being top of the line (Timken bearings).
The Viking and the plain Sebastian models had babbit bearings, and both gear head and belt drive versions were available. Standard bed length was 4', but longer beds were optional. If it happens to include the taper attachment, I'd dearly love some pictures of it

Sebastian was bought by Sheldon in 1953, and the Yahoo Sheldon group includes Sebastian, there is some documentation posted in the files and photo sections there.

In case you have not guessed, I have a 12x36 Sebastian Gold Seal gearhead lathe
