Collets

According to my 1960 South Bend Precision Machine tool catalog, the MIL4218 Milling Machine
spindle taper is a "No. 30 MM", and it takes "No. 30 MM taper quick change individual holders".

...whatever those are

The "collets" that South Bend used for there milling machines were a 30 MM taper that was held in by two set screws, one on each side that forced the taper up into it's seat. The were made by the Weldon tool Co. of Cleveland Ohio. Weldon came up with this system for a quick change system using either a 40 or 50 taper holder that then took these 30 taper holders. I think they are still available from Weldon.
