I was wondering why these are made, and what the uses and advantages are?

Is there any point in having one?

Thanks!
Sean

Sean, I think 2 jaw chucks are usually used in production situations, where one is holding odd shapes such as a pipe T fitting casting. The jaws are usually "soft" and machined to suit your part. Air powered chucks are often 2 jaw types.

Sean,
Don is right about the 2-Jaw, they are typically used in production for holding odd shaped or thin parts, with the "cavity" for holding the part cut out of the 2 jaws.

The real advantage they have over the 3 or 4 jaw chucks, however, is that you only have to machine 2 jaws to fit your part instead of 3 or 4, so it saves on machining time and jaw material costs to set up for a production job. It also saves on storage space if you have made a bunch of different jaw sets for different jobs.

2-Jaw chucks are also great for holding thin parts like washers and coin shaped pieces, as you can clamp a small block of steel between the 2 jaws, then cut the shallow round impression into the face of the 2 jaws, then remove the small steel block and you're ready to go.

Best regards,
Bawko
