3C collet size designation question?

I recently bought a small lathe and got a bucket full of 3C Hardinge Collets. On top of all the standard sizes, I have about 55 of these with # designations on them 1 through 55. #1 is about 5/16", and progressively 55 goes down to maybe 1/32" guessing.

Can someone please inform me on what the number designations are for?

Thanks in advance.

Those are sizes to fit number size drill bits, which are common in sets of 1 to 60, but are also made in smaller sizes.

Collets are also made to fit letter size drill bits and in metric and decimal inch sizes. Hardinge will make any size you want, for a price.
