5C step collet types?

I see the good ones have pins in the slots to hold the size while cutting but cheaper ones do not.

I guess you just put a pin in the bottom of the cheaper ones? Is that right? What if you want to drill/bore/ream it through?

I've used 1/8" shims in the slots too. BUT I don;t buy cheap ones, ®Royal and ®Hardinge are goto. When you are boring Collets and Jaws it's less about the quality of the product and more about the care and process used to Bore.
