Hi Guys,

I'm very new to machining. I bought a Lathe (3-jaw chuck) and a bridgeport mill just for working on stuff for myself around the farm.

I have some spacers that I need to shorten. I'm not sure how to mount the part in the 3-jaw chuck in the lathe or in the vice on the mill. I think the mill would be faster in terms of removing the metal. I need to take about a 1/4 inch off the end. The end I'm shortening is not the end with the wide flange its the other end.

Any suggestions on how to hold the part so that I can do the work?

To improve on Post #2 - if necessary- , "pack" the jaws as needed with three identical pieces of metal - the aim being to chuck on the small diameter but not the large

Get used to the idea of making machinery do what you want

In the mill? Get or make a suitable block of metal - make a hole in it that is an easy slip fit for the small OD. Then saw the block almost all the way thru in such a way as to make yourself a BUSHING CLAMP for use in the mill vise

Get used to the idea of making simple effective aids such as this tool. Before long such things will become part of planning out a job

We can't tell from the picture how big or small that part is.
But posts #2 and #3 give you good ways of doing it.
