    Yup, 1/2" in a through hole is big enough for this trick to work. All you want to do is blow out the center web of the tap enough to be able to break it all up and knock it out. Going to suck upside down and you need to come up with sheet metal shielding to protect that stuff underneath. It will be a five second job, though.

    I have successfully done this. A piece of 1/4 plate 1 x 1", drill a 7/16 hole in the center, now drill a 5/8 hole halfway through material. Position the plate over and stick or mig weld to the tap. Now back out the tap.
