Knurling with the Reed B-36???

Hi everyone! This is my first post. I’m setting up my home machine shop. I just bought a beautiful Southbend Heavy 10 and a bunch of tooling at an auction.

One of the tools I misidentified as a fancy knurling tool. It turns out it’s a Reed B36 thread-forming tool.

Now I’m wondering if it CAN be used as a knurling tool, as the processes seem similar.

Has anyone ever done this? Are there different rolls used?

Thank you!

Jim

Yeah, so I guess it can. I found some docs on the Reed site. It’s quite complicated.

If anyone has some advice for me that would help me understand this, it would be appreciated.

If in good condition, the thread rolling head is worth more than a knurling tool, and it will not convert into a good knurling tool. Sell the thing to someone who can use it and buy a real knurling tool that suits your needs.
