Default Freon can core charge, extra $10.00 a can

Wanted to ask if this is California only. I went to buy a small can of R134 for my truck ac. California now charges an extra $10.00 a can "core charge". return empty can in 90 days and get $10.00 back. more then 90 days lose $10.00. If this is not nationwide I will stock up next time I am in Nevada.
Seems like a bad policy normally I add about 1/2 can to top up a car ac system. It would be cheaper to then vent the 1/2 can and return the empty rather then lose the $10.00 and maybe have a slow leak with a empty can in 5 years or so when I need more.

I just bought a can in AZ about 3 weeks ago with no "can core charge". Come to Nevada or Arizona or bend over and relax.

Don't you people get tired of living in California???

    I bought a case of R-134a at Sam's for $64. And, NO, I didn't pay a core charge.

Your story, and your rationale show that ham-handed regulators often get it so very, very wrong and cause more damage than they avoid.

I see opportunity here. I'll sell it to you for cost (less than CA, I'm sure) + $2.50 +whatever the flat rate box cost. You sell them for your cost + $2.50 and it is still a smokin' deal for the user!

Just waiting on your order ( and payment).

If you guys knew half the shit that these IDIOTS in the California legislature are doing or have done you'd be freaking out knowing it's coming your way.

Other than that, the weathers nice.

USPS probably considers a can of 134a as HAZMAT.

May have nothing to do with environmental regs. Could just be greed. They figure enough people wont bring it back and they clip each for a tenspot.

    Steve45,
Don't harp on the 'fornians for living out there, they could move to your city and take over the city council like they did in Dublin. You are supposed to say how wonderful it must be to live THERE.

A can of Dupont Sulva 134a at Mills Fleet Farm is 9.99 here in MN, no core charge. I'm with Mebfab, it's all just greed, see, they have to pay these people to come up with that stupid crap so they need a way to fund it.

It's a good thing that California is the only state with idiot legislators.

What does this have to do with machining or manufacturing?
Do you ever start any threads abut machines or machining?

Bill, no extra charge here....they just charge 14.99 a 12oz can, but NAPA next door had it 12.99 on sale>

Best thing I can think of- I have about 10 empty cans here in the scrap barrell- I could mail them out to you and you turn them in for the deposit, mail me half and I will come out money ahead!!!!

Dang straight reggie! Steenking OT's, like that guy Milacron and his cat's piss-works. Some of us have learned to ignore titles that don't appeal to them, while others apparently enjoy the game: read-it-all-and-whine.

Now the true afficianados of read-it-all-and-whine, will wade through a great wad of responses just to get their whine in, an expression of great anguish.........

What’s next? A core charge on steel shavings when we buy steel to machine?

I've ended up paying £10==$16 core charge for a refill bottle over here in Blighty, but no time limit on it, so it's not a major issue.

i refilled my car 5 month ago and had a full can left over that i saved for topping off, Plus i found a empty that someone had not returned. a couple days ago i fixed and refilled my ford ranger. i went to walmart and bought two can and walked out to my truck and got the two old empty cans and walked right back in for my can core charge on my old cans.

Don't throw away those old can if you don't refund them in 90 days as they don't mark them when sold and you can use them for trade in later.

some time early next year i am moving back to northern calif near reno and will start buying in nevada from then on.

oh by the way the price in "lost wages" is $2.00 a can less not counting the can charge so the company making the R134 is also tacking about a $2.00 CHARGE ON FOR THE SPECIAL KALIF CANS.
plus there is a $2.50 charge for the special adaptor fitting to tap the Kalif cans.
