I have been approached to make a part that has a .165 shank or core and they want a trepan machined .5 deep into the existing .25 stock. This is 6061-t6 aluminum. Is this doable. Seems almost impossible or better yet not practical. Can anyone help with some info as I don't know much about trepanning.

...uh.... 1/2" deep into 1/4" stock? Making a leap here, no notation so I'm guessing inches?

For some of us, well.... maybe just me.... l need further info.

Is the ".165 shank or core" the diameter of the trepanned hole? That's less than 3/16", a drill won't work?

"Seems almost impossible", yup, hear ya' there...

In .250" dia stock as in leaving a 0.0025" wall?

Without special (and expensive) tooling, at over 2 dia's deep with such a small cutter you're in enough trouble already?

That's do-able, but you're going to have to grind some special tools with itty-bitty cutting faces and lots of relief on the other side. You didn't say, but does the trench have to be a square cross section?
