Alternatives to black oxide and black zinc plating

My company makes specialized test equipment, and in the past we were plating the various steel parts with black oxide, which worked well. Unfortunately around here (Northern California) black oxide plating is no longer available.

We've gone to black zinc plating instead, but its pretty expensive, generally costing us more on each part than the raw material cost, and sometimes we get some flaking, which was never an issue with the black oxide.

The testers are used inside, so no exposure to water, but get some oil splashed on them.

What is the least expensive plating we could use on these parts that has a reasonably good looking appearance?

Thanks,

Paul T.

Well for anybody else looking for a black oxide plater in Northern California, I finally found a plater who still does it (all the other ones I was using around here got shut down by the environmental squads).

Its called Pen Oxide in Redwood City, CA phone - 650-556-9463

The parts are heading there tomorrow, I'll post back how they come out.

EDIT- also HyTech Plating in San Carlos still does black oxide
