If you purchased a few, you might know who makes them.......

It seems that "L9" is a 180 ksi fastener, it's a brand, actually.

Bolt and Nut Supply Ltd., is a Canadian Owned company which was established in 1959 by its founder Cliff Hill, and to this day remains family owned and operated by his son and successor Doug Hill. We are proud to be 100% Canadian and have enjoyed almost 50 years of success as a quality industrial fastener distributor in Ontario. From a small location on Pretoria Road in Galt, to the present day Head Office on Franklin Boulevard in Cambridge, the company has undergone many changes The Cambridge facility, covering 31,000 square feet, is the main fastener distribution point, with branches in Brantford, St. Catharines and Stoney Creek operating as retail outlets and mini-warehouses.

Bowman also has bomalloy which is a "grade 9" fastener, but beware not all grade 9 bolts are the same, there isn't a standard for the strength - it varies between manufacturer.

Are you replacing a bolt or designing a connection? L9, Bowmalloy, etc have different head marking if you replacing a bolt. L9 and bowmalloy are similar, we have used both where I work. I don't like high strength bolts as the are more susceptible to hydrogen imbrittlement and stress corrosion cracking than a grade 8.

If you have a Caterpillar dealer local they will likely have them in stock. Cat refers to the bolts above grade 8 as "high strength", but I have been told they are grade 9 equivalent.

Edit: I see Bob got his post up while I was typing.

yeah, if you are really concerned about that, one should be going B7M or something NACE compliant.

Why not just use a bigger bolt?
