Boring Bar selection

Kind of screwed myself by not having a desent Boring bar selection in my arsenal of tools and 1 little screw shut down my whole week end.

I have a APT 2” Boring Head that came with a Shars 7/16” x 2 ¾” Boring Bar. The POS screw seized into the holder, and after I stripped out the torx wrench trying to free it, I finally threw it away.

Ordered 1 of Enco’s USA brand insert boring bars with a 1 deg rake so I could finish (some time next week ~ ) but would like to know what you guys are using for mild steel or Al. applications

I use old H.S.S. for most applications. I also use a bar that holds an TPG style insert with good results with the right insert. I try to use an insert with no or little honed edge of .001-.002". If stringers become a problem change to a insert with built in chip breaker like a TPGF style insert. Coated inserts give a little more life per edge on inserts. I machine a lot of tough 4140-4145 steel h.t. up to 36-40HRC and some 4340 too.
Ken.
