I'm looking for something to machine the ends of ballscrews. I currently have a 13x40 import lathe. I was about to drop a few hundred on a collet chuck, but am having second thoughts... maybe should just ditch the whole lathe and go with something else.

How good are the old 10x20 Monarchs and Hardinge toolroom lathes for this application? The ball screws are very hard and require carbide insert tooling to get through. They're also best held to the spindle with 5C collets.

Your opinions? What kind of a manual lathe would you buy given a 10K budget?

Here is a detailed description of how to turn the ballscrews:

Your 13x40 lathe should be fine for it. 5Bears recommends a 4-jaw chuck to get the job precisely done rather than a collet chuck. Spend the collet chuck money to buy a good "tenths" indicator, such as an Interapid.

Best,

For that budget I'd get 2 lathes, a 10EE for fine work and a 16" x 72 - 60 Series Monarch for longer, heavier work.

Possibly with some searching and waiting both could be had in very nice condition.

I regard the Hardinge as being very accurate but will not hold a candle to an EE when it comes to removing metal.
