Default OT: Mchinists and whiskey selection

Since many machinists can be pretty particular, I thought this might be a good place to ask about referrals on whiskeys. I primarily enjoy Crown, Maker's Mark, Canadian 12, and a couple others. I am not only a quality shopper, but a price shopper so I like to find those little value buys that are maybe less known.

There is one I want to try called Knob Creek. I think it is 110 octane IIRC. I have been told time again that you get what you pay for with Whiskey and Bourbon. Might be all true.

Let's don't take this discussion into the drink/don't drink area. if you don't drink or have anything useful to add, please do not flame us that do.

    thanks

    I am a value shopper.

I love it when a whiskey connoisseur shares his favorite brand with me, but when I am buying for myself, I get sick at the thought of overpaying.

A good, value-priced bourbon is Evan Williams. In Michigan, it is $11.77 a bottle.

Can you find American Honey where you are? It's made by the Wild Turkey folks and delicious, but plan on staying home.

    Black or Green?

I like the black label myself,I drink it straight from the bottle with a glass of ice tea to chase it down with

I'm primarily a single-malt Scotch fellow (MacCallan 12 for me), but when I do go for bourbon, I do enjoy Makers Mark the most.

I have all mine neat, thank you.

That one's the Cask Strength though, a gift from my brother.

Crown Royal is good, but its $$$$$$$$. If you are going to mix it with something (Sprite, or coke), its a waste.

Canadian Whiskey, or at least stuff that tastes like it. Black Velvet wasn't bad, Canadian Mist, Seagram 7, (the VO is $$$). Canadian club tastes like kerosene, crap for the price.

Sadly, Albertsons blended whiskey is pretty good, it tastes more like a canadian whiskey than their "canadian whiskey".

On the bourboney Tennessee type whiskey, Jack is good, but the Evan Williams, half the price and I think it has a better flavor, it has a little more of a bite, not burn your throat alcohol bite, but flavor, and its cheap. Black stuff, not the green. That's my favorite.

Evan Williams over ice, splash or 2 of Sprite (not Sierra Mist or 7UP), that's a treat.

    Smile Powers Irish Whiskey

John Powers Gold Label is my favorite for sippin' straight up. Real nice stuff, and less costly than Jameson Irish, or good Scotches. I also enjoy Jack Daniels "Gentleman Jack", Crown Royal, Makers Mark, etc.

Sometimes I likes 'em too much!

Makers Mark, one of my favorites.

I've been trying a bunch of single malt lately, Glenfarclas, Grant's, Catto's... I think I like the Cattos the most. Not sure if I care for any of the single malt as much as Makers Mark.

It's been a while, can't get it here, but I've had Knob Creek and it was really good. When the bottle was empty I put some old school dark sulferized cutting oil in the bottle and kept it under the lathe .

If I have to drink whisky it's Bushmills Black Bush. In my opinion much better than Jameson's. I do prefer a good IPA though.

All this talk got me to go crack open a bottle of Chivas Regal that my wife gave me for Christmas...of 2008.

I guess I'm not all that enamored by blended whiskeys, but it was a pretty smooth drink.

I had a couple of shamples. I am not as think as you drunk I am.

Bushmills is my favorite. An Irish friend turned me onto it 30 years ago. then another Irish friend informed me that Irish Catholics drink Jamesons, oh well... [Fitzsimmons]

Damn - thanks for the reminder - I haven't had any whiskey in 4 months.

+1 for the glenlivet. Also Laphroiag.

But if I had to chose? Oban. I buy one bottle a each new years, and make it last all year. I think I'll go have a small glass now to celebrate one year (today) of unemployment.

    Cheers!

who knew the mention of whiskey would bring everyone together?? lol. That is what it is for me. I enjoy it, I enjoy a drink with friends.

remember, I am a value shopper, lets get some prices in here. Adjust your posts if you can and maybe compare to something more main stream since prices vary with state.

Wild Turkey was the other I did not mention but really enjoy. I love crown because it is so smooth but I also like to mix drinks with something with more bite like Turkey and Makers. I will have to read through some more replies.

EDIT, I should mention that I have had Even Williams and doubt I could give them another chance. Drank that stuff when I was in my 20s and was bottom barrel stuff. Known to 'not set well'.

Blanton's Single Barrel, but it's definitely not for value shoppers. A shot of Blantons, a few drops of water, maybe one ice cube. Sit down, enjoy, relax, and think a bit.

But then again, I'm an engineer, not a genuine machinist, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

    Bourbon...
What I cut my teeth on, literally.
Beam is what is bourbon is, there is better and there is worse, but Beam is the archetype.
Evan Williams...just fine or a little better
Makers Mark...a little sweet for me
    Bullitt...very nice clean and dry
Knob Creek...worth the price, dry and clean clean finish
    Bench Mark...cheap perfectly fine bourbon.

    Canadian...

    Irish...
Tulamore dew, in the clay bottle.
    Bushmills Black

    Blended Scotch...
Dewars, in the flamables cabinet next to the paint thinner with a coffee cup.

    Single Malt Scott's Whiskey...
    My house is Macallan 12
all the Macallans are nice including the above mentioned Oak Cask Strength
On days I feel rich I drink the grand reserva.
    Aberfeldy
    Glenfidich port wood 12 yr

    Odd balls...
Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey...made from barley, blended by a guy that really knows his shit.
