I have 24" Mitutoyo height gage that "went to sleep". Mitutoyo wants about $500 to fix it. I checked with some other machine shops in the area and evidently this is a common problem. Anyone know of a less expensive repair resource or do I just use it as an expensive transfer stand?

Rob, What style/number of height gage are you referring to? I repair the dual beam digitals at least once a week at my regular job as a QC technician with great success. The things really are bullet proof so to speak. Out of the 60 or so in the plant I have only lost two (that quickly became spare parts). Some of ours have been in use 24/7 since 1991.

The things that kill a Mitutoyo height gage are torn ribbon cables, broken jewels in the optical encoder gear train, and the teeth on the rear upright being ripped to shreds by users that don't understand that when the handle is loose, turning it faster isn't helping.

Let me know if I can help. -Mike
