I have a 15" plain back chuck that I want to mount on my Reed-Prentice. I feel like I have developed enough skill over the past couple of years to make an L-1 adapter. Is 1018 (that I have on hand) suitable for the job or should this be cast iron?

Actually, I think a piece of 1018 would be rather painful to have on your hand if it was the size needed to make an L-1 adapter.

Should make a fine adapter though.

Technically, steel will transmit vibrations much better than cast iron. Arguably, a chuck adapter is not something you want to be "good" at transmitting vibration. Realistically, however, the difference between cast iron and steel may be negligible in this situation.

I'd say (but what do I know), unless your plan is to use this for super high precision, perfect surface finish parts, steel would be dandy. Even then it might be OK, but if your goal was perfection I wouldn't "gamble" on the steel's performance.

ciao
