Found a company that sells Timken bearings at a good saving vs the factory replacements but need the Timken part numbers for the spindle bearings. I'm rebuilding an Atlas 12 lathe headstock, and am trying to get the parts together so I can R&R at the same time.

Thanks...

Front bearing:6150
Front race:16284B
Rear bearing:14125A
Rear race:14276B
But if I remember right, the stepped races made them exepensive.

Hello,

I know that the Atlas lathe I owned many years ago the Timken bearings were hand etched with a precision grade mark. Don't remember the grade, but it was above a standard cup and cone. You may want to check to see if this is the case with your lathe.

bearing grades

I have discussed this several times in the past with people on the Logan group.
There is one school of thought that bearing manufacturing has advanced in the past half century to the point that today's quality automotive-grade bearings are pretty close to 1940s precision grade.
This suggests that one could use off-the-shelf Timken bearings for any of the 2nd tier machines such as Atlas, Logan and several others, without a noticeable loss in precision.
Does anyone here have expertise in this field?
