I am having trouble solving a problem and know the answer is right there but not seeing it. Have three holes 120 degrees apart and center to center distance is 4.216". What is the bolt circle diameter?

The radius of the circle is half the distance between centers divided by the sine of half the included angle, so

r = 4.216/2 divided by sine(120/2) or 2.108/cos(60)

If you draw your triangle and a circle around it then a line from the vertex of any point to the center of any side forms a right triangle. The hypotenuse is the radius of the circle, and the side adjacent is half the distance between the vertexes.

The diameter is 4.868"

whoops - I type too slow :)

4.216/2 = 2.108

sin 60 equals opposite side over hypotenuse

opposite side = 2.108

hypotenuse = r (the radius of the circle)

sin 60 = 2.108/r

diameter = 2r

Draw a triangle with 120, 30, and 30 degree angles. The longest leg is length 4.216.

Bisect the longest leg and the 120 degree angle.

You now have a triangle with a 90, 60 and 30 degree angles and a leg opposite the 60 degree angle has length 2.108.

sin 60 equals 2.108/r. r is the radius.

r equals 2.108/sin 60. sin 60 equals .866

r, the radius (the hypotenuse) = 2.434

twice the radius equals the diameter.

2r = 4.868

cos x = adjacent side over hypotenuse

sin x = opposite side over hypotenuse

tan x = opposite side over adjacent side

30,90,60 ratios. 1,2, sq root of 3

one half of 4.216 / 1.732 and double it. Ma Burton the math teacher Taught how math worked, in the real world.

Concur with answers.

For problems like this, always break it down to triangles, right triangles if you can.

67cuda the link did not work, said it was not compatible with 64 bit system.

The link didn't work or the program didn't work? It's an old program (10 years) but is very good. If your trying to run it in a 64 bit system it's probably not going to work, many new progarms have issues with 64 bit. Try running it in XP compatable mode if your using Windows 7..
