Manual mill feeds and speeds

feeds and speeds

Hello guys !

In our shop we use 4142 (42cd4) and 1045 (xc48) steel a lot , what do you think is the best feed especially in milling gears .
.
it would depend on
.
1) the cutter type, hss, carbide, etc
.
2) and how rigid part setup and machine setup was
.
3) what size teeth, depth of cut, etc
.
4) tolerances wanted
.
5) expected tool life, some push tooling harder but then tool life is shorter
.
usually you slowly increase feeds and speeds until you have sudden tool failures or short tool life, cannot meet part tolerances, etc and then you reduce setting til tool life and tolerances are acceptable. it usually requires recording things and trying slightly different settings and then seeing if things are going in the direction you want.
.
some cutters can take .001 to .004" per tooth in feed and heavy duty cutters can take much more. but finish cuts usually feed is less that .004" per tooth, sometimes a lot less to meet the part tolerances
