I cant get my around a problem and what could be the cause!
On our cylindrical grinder we are checking run out TIR on top of the machined dia and opposite the grinding wheel. The result on the top is 0.006mm on the side it doubles to 0.012. The shaft is between centres and supported with two steadies on white metal pads.
Any ideas why this is happening.?

Welcome abord,

We need a LOT more info, ........material, dia, length, type of grinding operation, make and type of machine etc tc etc etc

It sounds to me like you may be using TIR wrong. Is the part tapered but round at each section, or at any individual position of the indicator rotating the part causes a movement of the indicator needle from 0 to .0012?

If it is the first, likely your table (centers) need turned slightly to correct the taper. If the latter, it could be many more things but I would start with new centers.

Otherwise, you have to tell us a lot more information.
