I want to install one of these Welch Cam Lock clamps on my Clausing 15" drill press:

(note: pic borrowed from a post by precisionworks in a previous thread, and I WONT be using it alone or with such a huge bit)

The clamp is made for a 3.5" column, but the Clausing is 1/64 shy of 3". I have two questions for you guys: (1) What would you make the bushing out of? (2) Would you add height to the bushing (so that it covers, say, a 2.5" tall section of drill column rather than the current 1.25" or so)

A piece of 3" schedule 80 pipe is 3.5" od and approx. 2.9" id. Just get a 3" nipple from a plumbing supply, chuck it up, clean up the outside, bore, face, cut off, have a beer. (don't forget to split it of course).
