This is an idea, I've never done it on a small machine like yours but You may want to call a few DRO maker's . I once put a DRO oin a cylindrical grinder that resembled a hydraulic cylinder and it attached to the end of the slide and not to the side. The reader was on the inside and was sealed. Good luck :-).
