Inspect things?
"Inspection" or "toolroom" we named just to distinguish them from 'working' tools. "Working" tools would spend their short miserable lives out on the shop floor, being abused by gorilla mechanics. "Inspection" tools would be fondled and lovingly lubricated by the toolroom guy and never, ever, be asked to perform difficult labor on the shop floor.
In summary just treat it as a largish flat surface - check heights of things with a height gage, compare heights with an indicator, make sure of feature parallelism, etc. The usual surface plate stuff. Fondling is optional.
